At the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, we were honored to care for Mia Love—a trailblazer, public servant, and loving mother—through one of the most difficult journeys of her life.

Mia Love made history as the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Utah from 2015 to 2019. A daughter of Haitian immigrants, she inspired millions with her leadership, courage, and commitment to public service. When Mia was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022, she faced her diagnosis with the same determination that defined her career.

After her diagnosis in 2022, Congresswoman Love enrolled in a clinical trial at Duke, receiving immunotherapy as part of an innovative approach to treating glioblastoma. Despite the challenges of her diagnosis, she used her platform to raise awareness for brain cancer research and to advocate for others facing this disease. In a 2024 CNN interview, she courageously spoke about her experience as a patient, her hope for progress, and her deep gratitude for the care she received.

Congresswoman Love surpassed her original prognosis and continued to be a voice of strength and resilience even in her final months. Her journey mirrored that of so many of our patients—individuals who choose to keep fighting, to keep advocating, and to keep believing in a better future for others.

Congresswoman Love passed away on March 23, 2025. We extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones and to all who were touched by her remarkable life. Her impact lives on through her contributions to clinical research, her advocacy, and the strength she showed in every step of her journey. Congresswoman Love will always be a part of our community.
